Shofuku Temple
Take a walk back in time to visit Japan’s first Zen temple. It was founded by the priest Eisai with support from the Samurai Lord Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1195.
Tocho Temple
Located a short distance from Hakata Station, Tōchō-ji is a temple with a long history but of relatively recent construction. The highlight of the temple is a seated statue of the Buddha carved from wood. At a height of 16.1 meters, the statue is claimed to be the largest seated buddha of its kind in Japan.
Kushida Shrine
Hakata's Kushida Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Fukuoka. Famous for its Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, this shrine offers other amazing sights such as the biggest Otafuku mask in Japan and a well where you can pray for eternal youth.
Kawabata Shopping Arcade
The first merchant area that flourished in the Hakata district and its history can be traced back to more than 130 years. It comprises two arcades, Kawabata Chuo Shopping Arcade and Kami-Kawabata Shopping Arcade which together measure 400 meters in length and more than 130 stores.
Hakata Doll Painting
Hakata dolls are renowned throughout Japan and overseas as outstanding examples of Japanese aesthetic beauty. The history of these dolls dates back to approximately 800 years ago when people in the area already maintained a unique custom of cherishing unglazed ceramic dolls.
