Dazaifu is a city on Japan’s Kyushu Island. It's best known for the grand Tenmangu Shrine, which is surrounded by thousands of plum trees and popular with students praying for academic success.

Kyushu National Museum
The first new national museum in Japan in over 100 years, and the first to elevate the focus on history over art. Kyushu National Museum is an eye-catching glass structure with a curved steel roof. It has exhibitions on Kyushu's history and its interaction with Asia and Europe as the gateway for trade to Japan.
Dazaifu Shrine
It is built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane and is one of the main shrines dedicated to Tenjin, the deified form of Michizane. The deity of learning, culture and the arts. It is one of Japan’s most important Shinto shrines, the head of 12,000 Tenjin shrines nationwide and one of the top places to visit in Fukuoka.
Umegae mochi tasting
A sweet rice cake speciality of Dazaifu. Alongside the path to the shrine are shops selling umegae mochi a grilled azuki bean cake stamped with the pattern of a plum tree flower. These snacks are strongly associated with the shrine for their connection to the legend of Michizane. It is said that an elderly caretaker, Jomyoni, prepared the snacks for him, and left one as an offering when he died.
